Update on the Sex Ed Curriculum in Montgomery County Public Schools

There has been mostly good news on the new Sex Ed Curriculum since our last newsletter.  First, the Montgomery County School Board adopted the curriculum and added some minor language about being gay or lesbian not being an illness.  Then, the State Board of Education issued it’s ruling allowing the curriculum to proceed and denying the request of the CRC/PFOX appeal.  They are also now saying they aren’t sure if they have funding to proceed with any further legal challenges.  Check out the latest article in the Blade at http://washblade.com/2007/7-13/news/localnews/10897.cfm  And of course, check out  www.teachthefacts.org  for the latest from the real heroes of this battle.

Update on the Sex Ed Curriculum in Montgomery County Public Schools

The trial runs of the new curriculum are now complete, and the staff at MCPS have been reviewing the results.  On Wednesday evening, June 6, the Superintendent will be presenting the final revisions on the curriculum as a result of these reviews to the Citizens Advisory Committee on Family Life and Human Development.  You may recall that when the curriculum was originally presented, we had hoped to have accurate statements  affirming that sexual orientation is not a choice and that LGBT people grow up to be successful individuals included in the curriculum.  This was deferred by the Board of Education pending the test runs of the curriculum.  If such statements are not proposed this time around, we may send an action alert asking you to contact Board of Education members shortly as the curriculum will then be presented to the Board on Tuesday, June 12.  Check out  www.teachthefacts.org  for the latest.

PFOX Continuing to Send Fliers in High School Backpacks

As many of you have seen, PFOX (Parent and Friend of “Ex-gays) began sending home fliers in the backpacks High Schoolers in Montgomery County under a new policy instituted last year by MCPS.  This is being countered across the county by PFLAG fliers.  Fortunately, the PFOX moves routinely garner unfavorable press (See Jim Kennedy's Teachthefacts.org blog:http://www.teachthefacts.org/2007/02/sentinel-teachers-are-unhappy-about.html).  The fliers also receive considerable negative attention within the schools as well.  A recent PFOX flier at Walt Whitman HS got a front page article quoting EMCQ organizer Tim Fisher and Teachthefacts David Fishback and an “opposed” editorial in the school’s student newspaper The Black and White.

Election Results

Tuesday's primary elections produced generally positive results for LGBT candidates in Montgomery County and the state.  Heather Mizeur was the top vote-getter among Democrats for House of Delegates in District 20. Incumbent Delegate Ann Kaiser in District 14 will also move on to the general election, as will Rich Madaleno, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary for Senate in District 18.  Dana Beyer made an impressive showing in her historic bid for House of Delegates in District 18, but did not finish among the top three.  In Baltimore, LGBT candidates Anthony McCarthy and Mary Washington also ran spirited campaigns for House of Delegates, but did not finish in the top three in their respective races, while incumbent Delegate Maggie McIntosh will move on to the general election.  LGBT candidate Tim Quinn will also advance to the general election in the House of Delegates race in District 37 on the Eastern Shore.  Congratulations to all these candidates.  For complete election results, click here.

Equality Montgomery County membership over 400 households!

What a difference a year makes.  Last year just before our first picnic, the group consisted of about two dozen pioneers who knew there was a huge GLBT community in Montgomery County just waiting to be connected.  Now, after attracting 200 people to that first picnic, and hosting our first Just Desserts, gay pride booth and candidate forum, we are up to 400 households in the county on our email list.  What a huge success!  And we know there's lots more of you out there.  So if you have a friend, or just get this sent to you through some other list -- then go to our web site (www.emcq.org) and get on the list.  We've got lots more in store for this coming year, and we know you won't want to miss any of it.

Equality Montgomery County Table at the Jazz Brunch

We will be table hosts at the Equality Maryland Jazz Brunch on Sunday, October 22.  This event is the premier fundraiser for EQMD in the Baltimore area, and is a fun, inexpensive way to support the organization that represents us in Annapolis.  Attended by 700 people last year, the Jazz Brunch this year will feature Christine Chavez, granddaughter of Cesar Chavez as the keynote speaker.  Billy Porter, Broadway star is going to perform, and NPR's Mark Steiner will emcee.  Go to the Equality Maryland website (www.equalitymaryland.org) to purchase tickets, designate Equality Montgomery County as your table host and get details on time and location.  We look forward to seeing you.

Join Us to Help Plan 2007 for Equality Montgomery County

If you've been enjoying our series of events over the past year and have some great ideas for things we should be doing, please join us at our next Organizer's Meeting -- Wednesday Night, October 4.  We're thinking about lots of possibilities -- A gay skater's exhibition and skating night; a night game of the University of Maryland's women's basketball team; canoeing at Seven Locks; a GLBT movie night at the AFI in Silver Spring.  But there are probably lots of other ideas.  Bring yours to our next meeting at Tim and Scott's:  7802 Aberdeen Rd in Bethesda.  Our meetings begin at 7:30PM and end at 9PM.

Holy Lesbian, Batwoman !

Batwoman will be the highest profile gay superhero to ever grace the pages of DC Comics. In various incarnations, Batwomen have had a long history in Batman comics, starting in 1956 when Kathy Kane first appeared. But this new version of Kane/Batwoman, that hits the streets this month, shares only a name with her predecessors.  The campy heroine who once carried a utility purse while clad in a full-body yellow one-piece now sports a new, dark costume, and she’s got an attitude to match. The GLLU WINS PRESTIGIOUS "INNOVATIONS IN AMERICAN GOVERNMENT" AWARD

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU) has been awarded the prestigious "Innovations in American Government Award" from Harvard University's Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation for reaching out to an under-served community and creating a model for community policing.

The GLLU regularly works with other police units to deal with crimes committed by and against the GLBT and allied communities.  GLBT and allied volunteers help establish the unit's priorities and functions and educate officers about the culture of the communities and their needs.

"I am extremely proud of Sergeant Brett Parson and all of the police officers, Reserve officers and community volunteers who have been so instrumental in the growth and success of our Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit," said MPD Chief Charles H. Ramsey. "From its inception five years ago, the GLLU has demonstrated that effective community policing involves much more than community relations." For more information, click here.

Same-sex Amendment Defeated in Senate Vote

A constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, backed by thePresident and conservative groups, was soundly defeated in the Senate on Wednesday, June 7, after proponents failed to persuade a bare majority of all senators to support the measure.  Equality Montgomery County members were asked to call the offices of Senator Mikulski and Senator Sarbanes to counter the overwhelming number of calls that their offices received from conservatives who supported the measure. Both Maryland state senators did not support writing discrimination into the United States Constitution. Fore more information, click here.
